Sightsavers is an international non-governmental organisation that works with partners in developing countries to treat and prevent avoidable blindness, and promote equality for people with visual impairments and other disabilities.
We work with local, regional, national and international partners and governments. With their help, we distribute treatments to prevent disease, carry out eye operations, advocate for disability rights and improve health services to create sustainable development projects.
Our vision is of a world where avoidable blindness is eliminated, and people with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else. We can only get there thanks to the generosity of our supporters, so we aim to be as transparent as possible so you can be sure your money is being used wisely.
We're proud to be a leader in our field. We are one of only nine charities ranked as 'high performance' by the UK’s Department for International Development, and are one of US evaluator Give Well's top charities.
Sightsavers Works In Tanzania
All five of the most common neglected tropical diseases are present here: trachoma, river blindness, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis (known as 'snail fever'), and soil-transmitted helminths (aka worms).
Sightsavers has been working in the country since the 1970s, helping to support and strengthen local eye care systems to tackle preventable blindness. We provide specialist training for health workers, increase public awareness of eye care and lobby the government to ensure eye care is universally available.
Our programmes in Tanzania mainly focus on preventing and treating trachoma, and providing cataract operations for those who need them. We also work to promote equal opportunities for people with disabilities.
Sightsavers Tanzania Careers
Want to work with us at Sightsavers? We're always on the lookout for great people to join our team.
Working in programmes
Our programme managers are often from a scientific or medical background. They are key to making our funds go as far as possible towards changing people’s lives and restoring sight in some of the poorest parts of the world.
Working in communications
Our communications and design team ensures Sightsavers' work is seen, heard and remembered. The team works on everything from organising celebrity auctions and events to coordinating press trips to Malawi.
Working in operations
We work in more than 35 countries around the world, which means we have a lot of logistics to organise. It takes careful planning to ensure medication, vehicles and equipment reach the right places at the right time.
Working in policy and advocacy
Our policy and advocacy team aims to ensure the voices of people with disabilities are heard, both nationally and globally. This is achieved through direct relationships with policymakers and by mobilising the public.
Working in fundraising
Our fundraising and award-winning supporter care teams engage with members of the public to ensure our frontline staff are able to do their work and change people's lives for the better.
Working in research
Sightsavers was recently awarded Independent Research Organisation (IRO) status, making us eligible to apply for grants funded by UK research councils. This achievement recognises the pioneering work of our research team.
