The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is funded by the national Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and is aimed at producing the ‘next generation’ of academics for South Africa’s universities.  It does this by identifying promising young academics, appointing them to full time, permanent positions (usually at lecturer level) and placing them on a six year developmental programme.  In the first three years of the programme, appointees are given a much reduced workload to allow them to complete a doctoral degree. In some instances, the requirement may be for the completion of a master’s degree with progression to some doctoral level work.  In addition, appointees are mentored and supported as they are introduced to academic life particularly with regard to their teaching responsibilities.  A number of other opportunities are also open to appointees including support for research.

The nGAP offers a rare opportunity for individuals with an interest in pursuing an academic career to be developed in a supportive programme designed for their needs.
